History

Oakwood is an Intermediate Care Facility supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Opened in 1972, Oakwood is a state facility located in scenic Somerset, Kentucky, nestled between Lake Cumberland and the Daniel Boone National Forest. New Vista Community Mental Health Center began operating Oakwood in 2006 with the goal to assist people develop skills and interests to help them reach personal goals and live meaningful, balanced lives. Oakwood offers services that focus on wellness, community living, work and leisure activities in a safe environment. In 2018, Oakwood was named the Somerset-Pulaski County Business of the Year.

In addition, Oakwood provides employment opportunities on and off campus. Individuals create products offered at, Expressions Tea and Gifts, our retail location in the community. Expressions Tea and Gifts was named the 2017 Somerset-Pulaski County Nonprofit Business of the Year. In 2016, the Oakwood Specialty Clinic opened with state of the art treatment facilities for individuals with IDD in the areas of medical, dental, behavioral health, rehabilitation and therapeutic needs. The Oakwood Specialty Clinic is a resource for the entire region utilizing the most current treatment practices and technology. In addition to the variety of services at the clinic, the mobile assessment team assists families and agencies across the Commonwealth. Oakwood is proud of the many partnerships with advocacy groups, universities and medical specialists that promote better services, care, understanding and treatment for individuals with IDD.
